The Corn Marketing Program wrapped up its 9th annual Between the Rows Tour last week, projecting a statewide yield of 179 bushels per acre.

“Steady rains after the drought this June helped the crop catch up, and we’re seeing good-looking corn in the fields,” said Kristin Poley, director of Research and Agronomy for the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan. “We were worried that we might see some reductions in plant populations due dry conditions at and just after germination, but we found average plant populations of 30,000 per acre, which has been consistent year-to-year.”

Michigan Corn staff teamed up with interns from Nutrien Ag Solutions and students from the Marshall, Sanilac, and Ovid-Elsie FFA Chapters to complete a record 400 yield checks across 36 counties during the first two weeks of August.

CMPM shared the results and provided input and marketing updates to local farmers at a series of meetings during the last two weeks of August. The meetings at Voisinet Farms (Laingsburg), Beattie Acres (Marshall), Dan Trinkle Farm (Ann Arbor), Karnatz Farms LLC (Greenville), B&C Gordon Farms (Croswell), Ruggle Beef Farm LLC (Kingston) and Szikszay Farms (Otisville) saw a combined attendance of just under 500 people.
